Ezer k'gnedo... The Help That Opposes

Dear Traditional North American Church,

It's been a while since we last talked.  Admittedly I have been more of an outside observer than a participant  inside your walls over the last year, but I have noticed something that I'd like to bring to your attention,

You tell the women in your congregations to be submissive, that men are the spiritual head of their household.  You have created a tradition of male leadership and your opinions about the roles of males and females in good Christian families has been accepted by many as doctrine.  I think you may have missed a few things when you choose to hold that idea in a tightly closed fist.

You neglected to tell us that in Genesis when God created Eve He was not creating a servant for Adam.  The Hebrew words for "helpmeet" (Which by the way is a word that was coined around about 1604) (Genesis 2:18) are Ezer k'gnedo which means "the help that opposes."

"The Rabbis explain this term like two posts of equal weight leaned against one another.  They stand because of equal force." (A Year of Biblical Womanhood, Rachel Held Evans).

Eve was not less than Adam.  She was created to be his companion, they were intended to mutually exist and support each other.

You've left out the background information of Paul's Letters and given us isolated verses on which to base our marriages.  I have never heard an explanation from the pulpit of Greco Roman household codes and how they play into Paul's views and instructions.  I believe this is crucial context to understanding the time and culture Paul wrote in and the pattern of marital relationships back then.

What about Eshet Chayil?  Woman of valor!  Somewhere along the line you forgot to tell our men about this.  Perhaps you didn't realize that proverbs 31:10-31 is not a prescription for a woman, but praise for a wife from her husband.

Church, some of our marriages are based on these patriarchal teachings that have been upheld so that those with the most power in our society maintain that power.  Details have been left out and we have trusted you and your somewhat skewed interpretations of scripture.  I know women who started out their holy unions believing that a good Christian wife is submissive in all things and now they are realizing the lack of freedom in their situations. This is a heavy burden to have placed on the women of God.

I am saddened by the worry and heart ache I see in some of my sisters whose natural bent is not to stay quiet and obey.  I am saddened that my friends who feel the call to leadership are silenced.  I'm saddened by the sermons that are not being preached by women, because they are women and their voices are proclaimed  to lack authority when they speaks to the males of our species..

Perhaps it's time for a few revisions on popular church practices?

I appreciate your attention to these matters Church.

*Please note: I have used the term church here in the broad sense.  There are some wonderful, life giving churches out there that lift up and affirm all of their people... for that I applaud you.

Thankful Thursday #23 (A day late...)

Yesterday was ridiculously and gloriously busy... And it provided me with much to be thankful for...

  1. I live in such a giving city... Seriously I have been to the Food Bank and the New Life Mission this month and I am thrilled to know that our local grocery stores, Cobbs bread, Starbucks and several caterers in town donate leftovers and unused food to help hungry folks in our community.  Bravo Kamloops!
  2. Girlfriends... I love getting together with other women... there is something energizing about the way we talk and joke and feel bonded.
  3. Random acts of kindness... it's so much fun to pull off a great RAK!  I just wish I could be a fly on the wall to see the other person's reaction... and then turn human again so I don't have to eat poop... just sayin'.
  4. History... or maybe I am just thankful for other people's stories... never the less I quite enjoyed wandering around "haunted" places on Wednesday night hearing the stories of the ghosts who "live" there.
  5. My little sister... I just love you Heather.
  6. Night shift is finished!  Sleep has returned to me... it's a beautiful thing.
  7. Letters from my Compassion Kids... I love that we are actually corresponding... Maria Brenda our 9 year old girl just sent a letter thanking us for the Mother's Day card we sent to her mom... I love hearing from them.
  8. Following my friend Cole's trip to Disneyland via Facebook... it was magical... every picture and post from his mom made my heart swell...
  9. Planning for Christmas...
  10. Afternoon project time with my bigger kids... (Delaney is claiming to be big as well these days).  It's been so sweet to explore The Lion The Witch and The Wardrobe... and work on weather science projects.
What are you thankful for this week?

I'm Not Skinny Anymore...

"Who is that stick?" years ago a friend of ours had found a photo of me in grade 11... back in the day when I was about a size 2...
"I'm still a stick!"  I wailed... but the truth is I'm not... and I'm kind of glad.

Sixteen year old me was not happy with her body... she cried over her flat chest and bony limbs.  People would wrap their fingers around her wrist and in a shocked and appalled voice say "You're sooo skinny!"

Thirty-two year old me isn't perfectly confident either... I sometimes pinch my squishy belly and sigh... but I also sometimes catch a glimpse of my reflection as I'm getting in the shower and wink at the woman (because that is what I am) in the mirror...

It's true... I'm much more pear shaped than I was then... but I'm also much more sure... sure that my worth is not wrapped up in my weight... sure that my friends are my friends because they think I'm kind and we have common interests... not because of the way my jeans fit... sure that my husband loves my body whether it's a size 2 or a size 20.

I'm not skinny anymore... and I'm OK with that.

Five Ways to Win My Heart...

You know just in case you are looking to rock my world or float my boat... or just make me feel special... Here's a quick list how.

  1. Take me shopping a pick my clothes... seriously I love clothes... but I'm not super confident when it comes to picking them... and you will probably pick something that I never would have tried on in 1000 years...
  2. Let's go on a trip where we make too many stops... you now like "Hey there's a thrift store... stop at that fruit stand... follow the arrows to that garage sale... wanna find out what that plaque says at the stop of interest? Cause I do."
  3. Send me fun mail... you know like cute note cards... pretty bookmarks... there is a lot of love in the written word.
  4. Coffee... Chocolate... Wine... Sushi... Cheesecake
  5. Help me with something that overwhelms me... fresh eyes and an extra pair of hands are often the remedy for a big mess to be cleaned up...
What about you?  What are some things that boost your spirits and soothe your soul?

Ten True Things About Me... At The Moment

I went for lunch with a friend today... whose house I have gone to every week for like 12 weeks... but she spoke truly when she said "Tell me about you... We've hung out but I don't really know you"  I don't know how successful I was at revealing more of myself to her... so I thought this little list would be fun...

Fatherless Mothers

My heart is breaking for women who are living with husbands who don't help them... and I feel helpless to do anything for them...
So beautiful girl who is struggling to hold life together... trying to figure out how to make things better... watching as the other head of your family is oblivious to your need...

Know that I am praying for you...
Know that my heart bursts with love for you...
Know that even bigger than that is God loves you...
Know that you are worthy of this love...
Know that you were created to be beautiful...
Know that there are people who will rally around you...
Know that even though you are all the way on the other side of the computer screen... I am here for you.

A Letter to the Old and the New

Dear 2012...

You were a good year... you were the year I turned 30... and moved back home.

You were the year I spent wonderful chunks of time with friends who are dear to me... and the year when I made more dear friends...

You were the year I started drinking my lattes 1/2 sweet... proof that I am maturing.

You were the year that I had a crisis of faith... that turned into an attitude of love over law... I still have a long way to go... but I feel like the panic of deconstruction has past.

Love

Dear 2013...

Oh the hopes I have for you...

I hope to find community... and I hope my eyes are truly open to recognize what God's plan is for that.

I hope to be kinder... that love will overflow and not anger or judgement.

I hope to be generous... not with just money, but with words and time.

I hope to remember that each day is a blank page before me... crisp and white with no mistakes in it... and no mater what the page before looks like... I can start again.

Love

Sister Friends

Months ago I read a blog post by Sarah Bessey about friends in which she wrote; "It’s in that moment that you move from friends to sister-friends."
My heart lurched in a terrible way when I read that... My sister friends were so far away from me... I longed for a wonderful coming together like hers... I was thirsty for connection.

Let me tell you about my wonderful, sweet, amazing sisters of the heart.

Twyla- Twyla has taught me to be genuine... she has shown me that friendship does not mean we put on our pretty mask and drink tea with our pinkies up in the air trying to impress each other... I must give credit to her husband Terry though for the lessons in friendly debate. :)

Anita- Anita and I were bosom buddies almost right from the beginning of our friendship... literally she was my breast feeding support... The most important lesson I learned from her though is that just because you have a fight (even a big doozy one) it doesn't have to mean your friendship is a write off.

Katie- Katie taught me that relationships are worth sacrificing for... infact just this week I drove 2 hours and she drove 4 for an afternoon visit... to make contact and strengthen our bond...
Katie (right) and I (photo taken by my 6 year old)
Each one of these women I would call in joy or sorrow... each would welcome me to stay in their homes... and each I would trust to care for my children... these are my sister friends.
